Data Centre

AVK support the majority of the UK's major data centre installations with large multi-module generator power plants within buildings or external containers.

AVK|SEG (UK) Ltd, Power Solutions Providers, supplied 10.5mVA of UPS modules and generator sets to provide the Total Turnkey Power Solution to Easynet’s® major expansion of its Data Centre facilities at London’s infamous Brick Lane. Located within minutes of the City of London, Brick Lane E1 is in the heart of one the internet industry's fastest growing communities.

Easynet®, a leading pan-European commercial internet service provider and telecommunications company, commissioned AVK|SEG (UK) Ltd to produce a Total Power Solution whereby Easynet® servers that would be housed in purpose built data centres, and would be offered the ultimate in security, protection and connectivity.

The data centre was designed to minimise the use of energy, an example of which was the use of air cooling with the capability of providing 'free cooling' when the external air temperature reached 12 deg C and below. The whole facility was also fitted with EC motors where possible, such as the CRACs and chiller cooling fans these enabled a very efficient use of electrical energy.

EDS appointed AVK|SEG (UK) Ltd to supply them with their UPS package because of our ability to provide a system that retains its efficiency, stability & state-of-the-art technology.

Each system provided by AVK|SEG (UK) Ltd consisted of 2 off Protect 4 UPS systems. The Protect range of systems provide digital state-of-the-art UPS technology. Each system comprised five modules in an N+1 configuration for both streams A & B.

This data centre provides back-up and remote access should there be a major outage at any of the other centres. It is built on Tier 4 operation with 3 x 1400kVA generators operating in N+1. UPS systems are operating in N+1 and 2N with Load Bus Synchronisation between the 2N. A further 2N UPS systems will be added as the site expands.

Due to the large number of UPS system providing the Tier 4 operation the customer selected the AVK Titan UPS system. The Titan offers IGBT rectification removing the problems associated with harmonics caused by thyristor rectifiers used by others when on generator.

Three months of careful preparation paid off over the weekend at William Morris House, Mitcham Data Centre, when £2.5 million of new uninterruptible power systems and standby power generation were successfully installed and implemented.

The existing uninterruptible power systems and temporary standby generators were powered down to make way for the new electrical infrastructure, ultimately providing an increased system capacity of uninterruptible power systems and standby electrical generation.

AVK|SEG (UK) Ltd recently completed a major data centre project in West London using its 'Low Space Low Noise' containerised generators. The 'Low Space' is achieved using the 12 metre standard ISO footprint; this gives 5 metre centres between containers, providing suitable access space. The water jacket and turbo heat is removed using roof-mounted radiators with slow variable speed fans, to reduce operating noise. The ambient heat is removed using fixed speed fans and attenuation. The exhaust system is part-mounted within the container. All these design features provide a low noise level at the boundary of the site compound.
