In today’s world it’s cheaper to tunnel than to dig up the roads. National Grid are tunnelling in North & South London, and for the Olympics in order to re-enforce the network.

Generally the tunnels are 12 miles long, with access shafts along the route. Each of the access shafts has an emergency power supply providing ventilation, lightning, and life safety equipment in the event of a Mains outage. AVK have supplied the emergency power by provision of a 20kVA UPS System de-rated to account for the autonomy of 6 hours. This provides time for any engineers or any life safety recovery to take place in the event of a Mains fail. This is just one application for AVK UPS Systems for more information on this or our large Data Centre products.
