Case Study - Shell

Client: Shell Galleon
Project: Haliburton Brown Root
Market: Oil Platforms, Northern Sea
Date: August 1998
Equipment:

24V DC UPS

Following the successful supply, installation and commissioning of a 24V dc UPS system for Shell Galleon, AVK|SEG (UK) LTD has been awarded the contracts to supply further systems for Shell Ketch and Shell Corvette to provide power to essential services for these unmanned platforms in the southern North Sea. Proven reliability and easy maintenance were prime requirements for these contracts.

The systems consist of dual 100% rated rectifiers with 50% rated sealed lead acid batteries providing 24 hour standby, with up to 10,000A/h or battery power.

To maintain reliability, the systems are provided with battery temperature monitoring, charge temperature compensation & battery condition monitoring.

The dual 100% dc rectifiers are based on switch mode power supplies offering N+1 redundancy. They are available for all main dc voltages from 24V to 220V, resulting in a common equipment design and, therefore, only one technology to maintain.

Furthermore, the dc switch mode power supplies are all mounted in 19 inch designed racks providing ease of maintenance and replacement without system shut down – ensuring the load is uninterrupted.

With a power to weight ratio better than Thyristor based systems, the transistorised switch mode power supplies are ideal for off-shore applications with low weight, and providing for ease of maintenance.

Low input current starting, with high input power factor, high efficiency, low dc voltage ripple, with excellent dynamic response to load changes and an output permanently short circuit proof all provide a system with the latest technology. Analogue meters are provided for dc voltage and current for each switch mode module, providing full operational details of the system.

Alarms include a common fault alarm and over temperature by change-over fault free contact. Temperature compensation of the dc output is provided by external temperature sensing at the battery to ensure the battery is charged correctly at temperatures from 0°C to 30°C safeguarding the ten year design life of the battery.
